The first version of the Virgin of the Rocks is an oil painting on panel transferred on canvas (199x122 cm) by Leonardo da Vinci, dating to 1483-1486 and housed at the Louvre. The scene, set in a rocky landscape dominated by flowers and aquatic plants, depicts the encounter between the Christ Child and John the Baptist, an episode not in the canonical gospels. In the center Mary stretches her right hand to protect St. John, who kneels and turns to the Child that blesses him. Behind Jesus an angel looks at the spectator with a smile, while with his right hand points at the Baptist. The dark colors, the Virgin's left hand in a strange claw pose, and the ambiguous look of the angel who smiles and points to the Baptist instead of Christ make the painting unusual and in fact in the second version of London these details will disappear in a brighter and canonical canvas
